MITIGATING EFFECTS OF PROVERBS: A CASE STUDY OF PROVERBS IN CHINUA ACHEBE'S ANTHILLS OF THE SAVANNAH AND THINGS FALL APART.

Résumé L’article vise à mettre en lumière les marqueurs d’atténuation dans le proverbe nigérian. Se fondant sur la théorie des opérations énonciatives d’Antoine Culioli, l’article analyse quelques formes linguistiques de proverbes nigérians, détermine les opérations sous-jacentes et identifie leur effet atténuant. Les articles, les pronoms personnels, les constructions en ‘if’, le présent simple, sont examinés comme de potentiels marqueurs d’atténuation dans le proverbe nigérian. L’article révèle aussi que, les formes linguistiques identifiées semblent appréhendées dans leur conception générique, ce qui donne lieu à la généralisation et confère au proverbe nigérian son effet atténuant.

Abstract The aim of this paper to highlight some mitigation markers in Nigerian proverbs. Building on Antoine Culioli’s enunciative operations theory, the paper analyses some linguistic forms in Nigerian proverbs, determines the underlying operations, and identifies their mitigating effect. Articles, personal pronouns, conditional constructions in ‘if’, the present simple, are examined as potential mitigation markers. The paper reveals that, the linguistic forms identified are used in their generic meaning, which, indeed, paves the way for generalization and confers the Nigerian proverb a mitigating effect.
